Film sound used to be recorded directly onto an optical track running alongside the image on a strip of film, requiring complex manual synchronization. The arrival of digital recording completely transformed this process, allowing for far more precise recording, editing, and mixing.
Even as the technology has changed, the core principle of film sound design hasn’t: sound must serve the story, not simply document what happened in front of the camera.
